George Washington McKinely Jones (G.W) dreams of being a hero and stays by the Colonels side through battle. He becomes “one of the boys” and “mascot of the Ninth” and is deeply respected and distinguished by all of the men with no prejudice. G.W. must endure the hardships of war and battle hoping he will one day see an end to the war and be able to go North with the Colonel to live with his wife and son. Black dialect in dialogue.
